The staff at Derby Day Racing would like to share their final picks for Kentucky Derby 2018 and the Kentucky Oaks along with their favorite wager of the weekend. The 20-horse Derby field provides the best opportunity of the year to find some hefty payoffs. DDR Managing Partner Brian Zipse looks forward to the betting possibilities of this weekend, “I am a bettor who likes to go for a big score.”

Enjoy the Oaks and the Derby and good luck on your wagers!

BRIAN ZIPSE

Kentucky Oaks winner: – Midnight Bisou

Kentucky Derby Top 3: 1) Vino Rosso  2) Good Magic  3) Bolt d’Oro

Favorite wager: The Oaks/Turf/Derby two-day Pick 3 is one of my favorite plays of the year, and this time I like the wager once again. I really like Midnight Bisou in the Oaks, and I believe there is a good opportunity for a double digit winner in either the Turf or the Derby, if not both.  I will use Midnight Bisou as a single on one ticket, while hedging with Monomoy Girl and my top longshot in the Oaks, Eskimo Kisses. In the Turf, Arklow is my top longshot, but I will go with the five most likely winners, hoping for some odds. Finally, in the big one, Vino Rosso, Good Magic, and Bolt d’Oro are my top three, and all have attractive odds. Mendelssohn and Magnum Moon are savers, while Justify and Audible will have to beat me.

Plays:

$1 Pick 3 –  Midnight Bisou with Arklow, Beach Patrol, Deauville, Kurilov, Synchrony with Vino Rosso, Good Magic, Bolt d’Oro, Mendelssohn, Magnum Moon = $25

$1 Pick 3 –  Midnight Bisou, Monomoy Girl, Eskimo Kisses with Arklow, Beach Patrol, Deauville, Kurilov, Synchrony with Vino Rosso, Good Magic, Bolt d’Oro = $45

 MATT SHIFMAN

Kentucky Oaks winner: Midnight Bisou

Kentucky Derby Top 3: 1) Audible  2) Mendelssohn  3) Vino Rosso

Favorite wager: Over the years I have had success wagering on the Derby trifecta. With the 20-horse Derby field, this is a wager that historically produces big payouts, even when the favorite hits the board. This year I will make one 50¢ trifecta ticket with 288 combinations for $144.

Audible, Mendelssohn, Good Magic, Justify with Audible, Mendelssohn, Good Magic, Justify, Vino Rosso, Magnum Moon, Hofburg, Bolt d’Oro, Noble Indy with Audible, Mendelssohn, Good Magic, Justify, Vino Rosso, Magnum Moon, Hofburg, Bolt d’Oro, Noble Indy.

SCOTT DICK

Kentucky Oaks winner: Monomoy Girl, Long shot: Wonder Gadot

Kentucky Derby Top 3: 1) Mendelssohn  2) Magnum Moon  3) Vino Rosso

Favorite wager: My Kentucky Derby bet will be $5.00 Exacta wheels.  My biggest successes in betting the Derby have been with the exacta bet. In 2005, I bet a dollar exacta box which included the combination of Afleet Alex, Giacomo, and Closing Argument. The Giacomo – Closing Argument combination got me back nearly 5 grand.

Mendelssohn with Magnum Moon, Vino Rosso, Audible, My Boy Jack, Good Magic, Free Drop Billy, Bolt d’Oro, Hofburg

Magnum Moon withMendelssohn. Vino Rosso, Audible, My Boy Jack, Good Magic, Free Drop Billy, Hofburg, Bolt d’Oro

Good Magic with Magnum Moon, Mendelssohn, Vino Rosso, Audible, My Boy Jack, Free Drop Billy, Hofburg, Bolt d’Oro

TONY BADA BING

Kentucky Oaks winner: My Miss Lilly

Kentucky Derby Top 3: Good Magic, Bolt d’Oro, and Vino Rosso

Favorite wager: In the Derby superfecta, I will be wheeling my top three choices along with Mendelssohn in the win spot along with my top six choices in second and third place with a few long shot closers to finish in either third or fourth position. I am also high on Hofburg to finish second through fourth. Although I will have them underneath, Audible and Justify may pose the greatest danger to my superfecta by finishing first. I’m not sure if I will create a saver super bet or just go with my original handicapping opinions. I have the luxury of a decent budget, since 35 friends pooled their money with me and trust me to make all betting decisions – about $1,400 of $2,250 will be bet on superfectas. A few days before the race my biggest superfecta bet looks like this:

6,11,14,18 with 5,6,7,9,11,14,16,18 with 5,6,7,9,10,11,14,16,18 with 5,7,8,9,10,18 = $801

If pressed for an affordable play, I’d wheel Bolt d’Oro on top with the same five betting choices underneath like this: 11 with 5,6,9,14,18 with 5,6,9,14,18  with 5,6,9,14,18 and hope Justify misses the top four. This will only cost you $60. My early pace predictions have Flameway, Justify, Bolt d’Oro, and Good Magic working the best trips. I just think Flameway is a cut below and history may hook Justify in the final furlong. Bolt is underrated and his speed figures match up with the best of this crop.
