Derby Day Racing is thrilled and excited to announce the purchase of Sooner Schooner as our very first horse for the 2018 two-year-old partnership. We feel extremely fortunate to have found this good looking daughter of Lookin At Lucky available for private purchase for our partners.

Private purchases have become an important and successful way for partnerships to find horses of quality, and we fully expect Sooner Schooner to develop into a very good runner under the silks of Derby Day Racing.

Sooner Schooner is a juvenile filly bred by Mulholland Springs Farm, and was found for the partnership by Lexington based bloodstock agent Robert Knolhoff, Jr. Immediately a perfect match for what Managing Partner, Brian Zipse, and team were looking for from a pedigree standpoint, the long-bodied filly shows clear signs of taking after her sire from a physical standpoint.

A very rare runner, as a champion at both two and three, the consistent Lookin At Lucky was the winner of 9-of-13 career starts, including eight graded stakes wins, and with a little more racing luck, could have been better. A winner from 6 furlongs to 1 3/16, his biggest victories include the Preakness and Haskell. As a sire, the son of Smart Strike has proven himself as versatile and a strong representation of not only his sire, but also his grandsire Mr. Prospector. Among his numerous current stakes winners is Accelerate, recent dominating winner of both the Santa Anita Handicap and the Gold Cup.

On the female side, Sooner Schooner was produced by Schooner Bay. The daughter of Queen’s Plate winner, Archer’s Bay, was a stakes winner in Canada, and finished first or second in 10-of-17 career starts. Among her previous foals, includes the stakes winner, Indian Pond. On the male side of her pedigree, she gets speed and class from Silver Deputy and Deputy Minister, while her female side has consistent blacktype runners in Canada.

Sooner Schooner’s pedigree also boasts a strong niche between Lookin At Lucky and Silver Deputy …

Sooner Schooner will be trained by two-time Breeders’ Cup winning trainer Buff Bradley. Known for his development of top horses and extraordinary care, Buff echos Brian’s assessment that the newest addition to his barn has a long and fluid stride, is easy on herself, and has a great temperament.

Sooner Schooner passed her vet exam with flying colors Friday morning, and will be shipped from Keeneland to the Bradley barn at Churchill Downs today. A May foal, she is still filling out her frame and Buff will not rush her along. If all goes to plan, we can look forward to a fall debut for the first member of this exciting new partnership.
